How to get scholarships in Japan

There are a variety of scholarships for overseas students studying in Japan. The terms and amounts vary and, in most cases, it is necessary to apply after coming to Japan. Please understand that the scholarships alone are unlikely to provide enough to pay for living expenses and tuition.

Possible scholarships:

1. Japanese government (MEXT) scholarships

In order to apply, students need to have recommendations from embassies, consulates or universities in Japan. Reports, interviews and tests are required. If eligible, they can receive traveling expenses, entrance and tuition fees, as well as a monthly allowance of ¥117,000.

2. Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

This annual scholarship is for 8,070 international students who pay tuition or other costs by themselves. It is necessary to apply for this scholarship through schools. The monthly amount is ¥48,000 for undergraduate and graduate students and ¥30,000 for Japanese language students. There are some qualifications to get this scholarship such as a GPA of 2.3 or more, monthly financial support from family of ¥90,000 or less and other conditions.

3. Student Exchange Support Program (JASSO Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan)

There are some Japanese-overseas exchange programs for students at higher educational institutions (not more than one year, and not less than eight days). Eligible overseas students can qualify for ¥80,000 per month.

4. Scholarships offered by local governments and international exchange organizations

These scholarships depend on where students live and where their schools are. The scholarship amounts vary. For example, in Hachioji, Tokyo, students can receive ¥10,000 per month, while in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, they can receive ¥240,000 per year.

5. Scholarships offered by private organizations

Some companies and organizations offer scholarships. They recruit students who attend particular schools, major in certain fields or come from specific countries. In most cases, students are not eligible for other scholarships.
