Kawamura, 65, is well-known for his wide knowledge of government policy.
He started his political career by entering the Yamaguchi Prefectural Assembly in 1976 after graduating from Keio University in Tokyo.
After serving 14 years in the prefectural assembly, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1990.
Kawamura is a specialist in education affairs and was appointed education minister in 2003 by Junichiro Koizumi.
He helped draft Japanfs first law outlining its basic policy on the use of space.
Kawamura has various interests, including table tennis, stamp collecting and golf, which he has played with Taro Aso.
He has a network of friends in the opposition parties and corepresents a group of lawmakers from the ruling and opposition camps.
