Introduction

Master technology, create technology
Towards future technology

Toyohashi University of Technology was founded in 1976 with a mission to conduct research and education in “technological science,” developing new technologies through scientific inquiry. In the 50 years since its inception, it has accepted students well-versed in manufacturing and promoted a practical education combining theory and practice as two sides of the same coin. Presently it is focusing on the five main branches of engineering while strengthening its interdisciplinary fields such as sensing, the internet of things, artificial intelligence and robotics, as well as integrated fields such as cyber-physical systems and carbon neutrality. Through these efforts, it strives to contribute to the creation of a safe and secure society and the achievement of the U.N. sustainable development goals, thereby providing society with talent to actively enable innovations on a global scale.

One of its strengths is its large-scale integration (LSI) facility, which has been under development since the university’s founding for designing, prototyping, manufacturing and evaluating semiconductors. This has served as a base for top-notch results in research on semiconductor integrated sensors and devices. Its strengths also include interdisciplinary research into robotics and collaborations in agriculture and medical engineering, as well as research into social implementation. Additionally, its graduates are highly active in the business world. This is because the university is rooted in a system emphasizing practical education through technological science and industry-academia co-creation. Students are encouraged to try and realize new devices as well as ideas, thinking freely outside existing frameworks and tackling challenges yet unsolved.

It aims to be a world-renowned engineering university for teaching superior skills in implementation and adaptability through both industry-academia collaborations as well as enhanced international, technical college and university collaborations, thereby further contributing to the development of science and technology in Japan.

Facilities and support programs

Learn Japanese with a Japanese-language adviser (personal consultation)

Japanese-language advisers can support international students with whatever challenges they may have with improving their Japanese abilities, including practice in Japanese conversation.

Tuition exemption system

Financially challenged students who are recognized for their academic excellence may apply for tuition exemptions or deferrals. Separate applications must be submitted for both the first and second semesters. An internal committee will review the applications and may grant a full or half exemption for each semester.

Scholarships for self-funded international students

Various private foundations offer scholarships for self-funded international students. Students can check the university’s website for announcements about scholarship applications, which are usually open each year. It is important to check regularly. The number of scholarships is limited, and Japanese-language proficiency is required in most cases.

Supporter system

After arriving in Japan, students can receive personalized support from a student supporter assigned to them for their daily life for one year. Supporters, guided by faculty members, act as advisers to help international students live independently as students in Japan. This peer support system (assistance from individuals in similar situations) is expected to promote mutual learning and enhance intercultural understanding.
