Introduction

A university open to the region and the world, contributing to society through co-creation

Kumamoto University is a comprehensive institution that drives innovation and discovery while staying connected to both the local community and the global stage. Since its establishment in 1949, it has become a leading center for education and research, contributing to society through “co-creation.” Guided by our ideals of “Always communicating,” “Always transparent” and “Always improving,” we are dedicated to shaping the future through advanced education, groundbreaking research and meaningful social contributions.
Surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Mount Aso and the Amakusa Islands, Kumamoto offers stunning natural scenery and a vibrant environment. Our campus embodies this harmony, blending history with modernity. It features four national Important Cultural Properties, including the iconic Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, where the renowned writer Soseki Natsume once taught. In addition, the campus is home to a variety of museums that provide unique learning experiences. The Higo Medical Education Museum showcases the deep-rooted tradition of medical education in Kumamoto, highlighting the legacy of world-renowned bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato, whose portrait was chosen to appear on Japan’s new ¥1,000 bill issued in 2024. Moreover, the Kumayaku (School of Pharmacy) Museum, with its lush medical botanical garden, nurtures a diverse collection of rare and traditional medicinal plants, offering students hands-on learning opportunities.
Beyond its rich history and natural beauty, Kumamoto University is at the forefront of research in science, including the life sciences and human and social sciences, and engineering. In particular, we are committed to becoming a leader in semiconductor education and research, working closely with global semiconductor manufacturers, local industries and international partners. In response to the evolving needs, we have launched new institutions, schools and academic programs, creating comprehensive platforms for students aspiring to excel in these fields. Alongside advanced scientific research, we offer distinctive areas of study, such as animation and manga research through the International Research Center for Manga Studies, giving students opportunities to explore creative disciplines beyond traditional academics.
Home to around 10,000 students, including 500 international students, Kumamoto University welcomes students from across the globe to join its diverse and dynamic academic community. Honoring the legacy of the Fifth High School, founded in 1887, we continue to evolve, embracing transformation to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
