Furukawa is viewed as one of the DPJ's up and coming talents and is heavily involved in discussions on financial and social security reform.

He was one of three senior vice chief Cabinet secretaries appointed by Naoto Kan, and senior vice minister of the Cabinet Office under Yukio Hatoyama.

After getting his start in the Finance Ministry, Furukawa made a successful run for the Lower House in 1996.

He majored in law at the University of Tokyo and also studied international relations at Columbia University.

In 2005, Furukawa was named to a list of Young Global Leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Nagoya native is married and has two children.
