Noda Cabinet (Formed September 2, 2011)

FINANCE MINISTER

Jun Azumi

FINANCE MINISTER Jun Azumi

Date of birth: Jan. 17, 1962

Party: DPJ

Electoral district: Lower House; Miyagi No. 5 (fifth term)

Azumi has been his party's Diet affairs chief since January but was a senior vice defense minister when the Naoto Kan Cabinet was initially launched in September 2010.

Azumi represents Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, a city heavily damaged by the March 11 disaster.

Taking over Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's former position, he is likely to follow his predecessor's basic position of seeking to raise taxes provisionally to pay for the disaster reconstruction.

When the DPJ was still in the opposition camp, Azumi often appeared on television as one of the party's most vocal critics of the rival Liberal Democratic Party.

Before entering politics, Azumi was a political reporter for NHK.

A graduate of Waseda University, he is married with two children.
