Ryu Shionoya

Electoral district: Lower House; Shizuoka No. 8 (fifth term)
Shionoya was deputy chief Cabinet secretary in Yasuo Fukuda's Cabinet. This is his first ministerial position.
Shionoya entered politics by getting elected to the Lower House in 1990 but failed to win re-election six years later. He returned to the Diet for a year after winning a by-election in 1999 but lost his seat in the general election the next year and didnft return to the Lower House until 2003. In 2004, he served as vice education minister for a year.
Shionoya is chairman of the International Youth Association of Japan, an organization he established in 1973 to run exchange programs to promote international understanding. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps and enter politics after graduating from Keio University and Ambassador College in California.
