Hakuho stays perfect

Kyodo News

Yokozuna Hakuho turned up the heat in a roasting of rank-and-filer Takekaze to remain undefeated on the sixth day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday.

One day after the yokozuna survived sudden death with a close win over Kakuryu, Hakuho was in no mood for games as he toppled the winless No. 2 maegashira to stay on course in a bid for back-to-back titles after capturing the spring title with an undefeated mark.

Mongolian ozeki Haramafuji, the wrestler formerly known as Ama, is also sitting pretty with an unblemished record to share the lead with Hakuho as the 15-day meet enters the latter half at the weekend.

Hakuho let Takekaze have it with a slam to the chin at the faceoff before using a left-handed belt grip to send him sprawling to the dohyo surface at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Asashoryu, meanwhile, twisted around Tochiozan in the day's final bout before unleashing a series of hard shoves to knock the newly promoted komusubi over the edge and remain one behind at 5-1. Tochiozan slipped to 2-4.

Asashoryu, who is in a group of six wrestlers one off the pace, is seeking his 24th career title and first in two meets.
