Tochiazuma announces retirement

Kyodo News

Ozeki Tochiazuma announced his retirement from sumo on Monday, saying health concerns have robbed the veteran wrestler of the morale to continue with his career.

"I had long thought that I would have to quit if I was no longer responsible for what I need on the dohyo as an ozeki," Tochiazuma said, adding, "There is a trace of a stroke in my brain and it has made it hard for me to wrestle just with my heart." Tochiazuma, whose real name is Daisuke Shiga, withdrew from the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in March and was admitted to the hospital after complaining of headaches and dizziness. He was diagnosed with high blood pressure and tests revealed he had suffered a mild stroke in the past.
