DAY 11

Kotomitsuki 10-1 after upsetting yokozuna Musashimaru

FUKUOKA (Kyodo) Rank-and-filer Kotomitsuki rewrote the script Wednesday as the No. 9 maegashira threw down grand champion Musashimaru to pull off a giant-killing act and join yokozuna Akebono in a two-way lead at 10-1 in the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru slipped into a tie with yokozuna Takanohana and ozeki duo Kaio and Chiyotaikai, who all posted victories to remain one win off the pace at 9-2 with four days left of the 15-day meet at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.

Kotomitsuki, in his first career bout against a grand champion, tore into Musashimaru at the charge and stood his ground in the prolonged mid-ring stalemate.

Kotomitsuki then slipped free of Musashimaru's grip and sent him crashing to the dirt to dent the Samoan-born giant's back-to-back title hopes and boost his own chances of an Emperor's Cup.

Akebono bulldozed ozeki Chiyotaikai out of the dohyo for another easy win and improved his chances of adding to the title he won at the Nagoya tourney in July.

Fellow-grand champion Takanohana, chasing his first championship in two years, shrugged off a strong challenge from Miyabiyama at the tachi-ai before marching the ozeki out to his third straight loss.

In a battle of ozeki, Fukuoka favorite Kaio locked onto Musoyama (6-5) from the rear and tossed the Musashigawa stable wrestler out of the ring in his quest to claim the Kyushu meet title.

Ozeki Dejima outfoxed seventh-ranked maegashira Tochinonada by jumping to the left at the faceoff and quickly hauled down the Kasugano stable bruiser for the win. Both wrestlers stand at 8-3.

Sekiwake Takanonami (2-9) made light work of Hamanoshima (2-9) as the former ozeki dished out a barrage of thrusts before dumping the No. 2 maegashira over the straw ridge.

Wakanosato (5-6) barged out sixth-ranked maegashira Tochisakae (6-5) while fellow-komusubi Tochinohana was hauled down by No. 2 maegashira Higonoumi.
