Yokozuna Musashimaru and newly promoted ozeki Musoyama will sit out the upcoming Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with injuries picked up in training last week, stablemaster Musashigawa confirmed Thursday.
Musashimaru hurt his right knee in a practice bout Wednesday while Musoyama has injured his right hip joint and will make his ozeki debut at the Nagoya tourney in July, needing a majority of wins to avoid immediate demotion.
"Musashimaru is in no condition to wrestle. Musoyama doesn't look like he'll recover in time, so we decided it was best for him to withdraw," Musashigawa told reporters.
With the two Musashigawa stablemates out of the running, grand champions Takanohana and Akebono will like their chances of taking the Emperor's Cup at the May 7-21 summer tourney at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
