Great Wall open outside Beijing
By ED ODEVEN
BEIJING — It helps to ask those in the know.
Standing in the lobby of the Super 8 Hotel on Monday night was the manager, so I asked her about travel tips to the Great Wall, especially during a period as busy as the 2008 Summer Olympics.
She told me only certain parts of the historic landmark are presently closed, explaining that the most famous spot, the Badaling section, of the wall, where I had planned to go last Thursday, is closed until Aug. 14 for tour groups.
Other parts of the wall remain open, including Mutianyu, a 2,250-long section of the wall in Huairou County. It is 90 km northeast of Beijing.
Badaling, 70 km northwest of Beijing is where former U.S. President Richard Nixon made these memorable remarks:
"This is a great wall and only a great people with a great past could have a great wall and such a great people with such a great wall will surely have a great future."
I hope I'm able to take a few great pictures during my visit there.
