Chiba Jets sign pair of veteran forwards
By ED ODEVEN
If the current rate of signings keeps up, don't be surprised if a Cameroon basketball fan club is soon established in Japan.
Former Arizona State forward Serge Angounou has signed a contract to play for the Chiba Jets this season, the bj-league club announced on Friday.
Ex-UCLA post player Alfred Aboya, also born in Cameroon, recently finalized a deal to play for the Shiga Lakestars in 2012-13. Both men were born in Yaounde, Cameroon's capital city.
Angounou, 28, played for the Sun Devils from 2003-07, then spent two seaons in the NBA Development League with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds and Austin Toros. A Spanish major at ASU, Angounou played pro ball in Mexico over the past few seasons for a trio of teams — Guasave, Titanes and Potros. He's also played in Argentina.
The 202-cm performer made 83 starts during his college career.
The Jets also acquired forward Joe Werner, a former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse standout. Suiting up for the Eagles from 2004-07, Werner earned National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All-American accolades twice.
Werner's pro career has included time with the Lti Giessen 46ers in Germany, the Kilsyth Cougars in Australia and the WBC Raiffeisen Wells in Australia last season, when he averaged 13.8 points and 9.3 rebounds in 35 games, according to asia-basket.com.
In other league news, guards Cohey Aoki and Hirohisa Takada have been named co-captains for the expansion Tokyo Cinq Reves. University of Kentucky alum Jared Carter, a 216-cm post player, 31-year-old forward and well-traveled pro Dennis Carr out of NAIA school Embry Riddle and 25-year-old guard Rasheem Barrett, who attended Auburn University, have been added to the mix for the team's inaugural season.
The Oita HeatDevils, meanwhile, released details of two preseason games. The HeatDevils will play host to the Rizing Fukuoka on Sept. 22, followed by a game against the visiting Miyazaki Shining Suns a day later.
Elsewhere, former NBA center Lance Allred, an All-Star with the Kyoto Hannaryz last season, has joined Fuerza Regia Monterrey in the Mexican League.
