K. Takeuchi joins top trainer

The Japan Times

Center/forward Kosuke Takeuchi's quest to make an NBA Summer League roster has kept him busy. He's training with Phil Handy, owner of 94 Feet of Game, The Japan Times has learned.

Training guru Handy's clientele currently includes 20 NBA players, according to his online portfolio. His past clients include ex-NBA guards Steve Francis and Tony Delk. He also supervises workouts for top European and collegiate players and conducts team workouts, too.

Handy, a former guard, played college ball at the University of Hawaii. He was waived by the Golden State Warriors during preseason in 1995, but went on to play professionally in several countries, including France, Italy, Israel, England and Australia.

Takeuchi, the 2009-10 JBL MVP, plays for the Aisin Sea Horses. His twin brother, Joji, is a standout big man for the Hitachi Sunrockers. Joji Takeuchi spent time last summer working out in Chicago in an effort to enhance his chances of joining an overseas team. Both brothers have played on the Japan national team for several years, and they played in the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.

The NBA's Orlando Summer League will be held from Monday to Friday. The Las Vegas Summer League is slated for July 9-18.
