Reds fire Petrovic; Hori to manage

Kyodo

Struggling former J. League and Asian club champion Urawa Reds on Thursday announced they have terminated the contract of manager Zeljko Petrovic with immediate affect.

Urawa youth team manager Takafumi Hori will take over from the 45-year-old Montenegrin and will be in charge of the team for a difficult match away to title contender Yokohama F. Marinos on Saturday.

Petrovic, without first informing senior Urawa officials of his intentions, last Saturday told the media he was going to step down at the end of the season after a 1-0 defeat to Omiya Ardija saw Urawa slip into the relegation zone.

Although Petrovic has steered Urawa into the Oct. 29 Nabisco Cup final, it is currently on an eight-match winless streak and a point from safety in 16th place in the 18-team league.
