Hara: Saturday is deadline for candidates' response

Kyodo News

Japan Football Association technical director Hiromi Hara on Friday amended an earlier remark regarding his setting a Saturday deadline to hear from three candidates he is in negotiations with for the Japan national team manager's job.

"It is a deadline to hear some kind of response. If they want us to wait a little longer, negotiations will continue," Hara said.

Hara changed his story slightly from Thursday when he told reporters that he is hoping to reach an agreement with one of the three candidates he is in talks with by Saturday, Japan time.

He had said that he gave the three, whose names have not been disclosed, until Saturday to let him know whether or not they were interested in the job.

Hara has come under fire for not yet having found a successor to World Cup coach Takeshi Okada despite a monthlong recruiting trip overseas.

Kuniya Daini, who is in charge of selecting a manager, said "I have also spoken to Hara about this, but if there is no response by the candidates by Saturday, it doesn't mean that we're calling everything off. We are just hoping that we get a positive response."

Hara will be in the dugout as acting coach for Japan's friendlies against Paraguay and Guatemala on Sept. 4 and 7, respectively. Even if Hara does get his man of choice, a work permit cannot be issued in time for the two games at Yokohama and Osaka.
