FC Tokyo edge closer to Kyoto Sanga in Nabisco Cup

Holders FC Tokyo edged Kyoto Sanga 1-0 at home Sunday on a second-half goal by Kim Young Gwon, moving within one point of the group A leaders in the J-League Nabisco Cup.

The South Korean defender smashed home a long-range free kick eight minutes into the second half at Ajinomoto Stadium.

Kyoto finished the first round with 11 points from six matches. FC Tokyo visit already eliminated Cerezo Osaka on Wednesday, the last day of the group stage.

In Group B, Yuichiro Nagai and Yasuhiro Hiraoka scored to earn Shimizu S-Pulse a 2-0 home win over Julilo Iwata.

Shimizu stood atop the table with 11 points, one clear of Montedio Yamagata and Iwata, who will face each other Wednesday.

Shinji Ono, who missed out on Japan's World Cup squad, created both goals with free kicks.

Nagai opened the scoring in the 38th minute and Hiraoka netted a rebound after goalkeeper Naoki Hatta blocked a header from Bosnar on 62 minutes.

Only the top two from each of the two seven-team groups advance to the quarterfinals to be played over two legs in September.

They will be joined by Kashima Antlers, Kawasaki Frontale, Gamba Osaka and Sanfrecce Hiroshima, who all got byes into the last eight due to their involvement in the Asian Champions League.

The two-legged semifinals will be played Sept. 29 and Oct. 10, with the final scheduled for Nov. 3.
