Marquinhos named Player of Year

Brazilian striker Marquinhos was named the J. League Player of the Year on Monday after helping Kashima Antlers win the league title for the second successive season.

Marquinhos spearheaded Kashima's successful campaign as he finished the 2008 season on top of the scoring charts with 21 goals in 30 league appearances.

Marquinhos is the ninth foreign Player of the Year winner since the league was inaugurated in 1993.

Oswaldo Oliveira, Kashima's Brazilian coach, collected the Manager of the Year honor for the second straight year.

Yoshizumi Ogawa, who scored 11 goals to help Nagoya Grampus stay in contention until the closing stages of the season, was voted Young Player of the Year.

Gamba Osaka playmaker Yasuhito Endo was named to the J. League XI for a record sixth time.
