Vitor Junior helps Frontale to comeback point

KAWASAKI (Kyodo) Vitor Junior came up trumps with his second goal in as many games as Kawasaki Frontale earned a 1-1 draw with Nagoya Grampus in the J. League on Saturday.

Magnum gave Nagoya a 13th-minute lead against his former employer, but Vitor Junior added to his debut goal against Urawa Reds with a second-half equalizer to earn his side a share of the points at Todoroki Stadium.

The result saw Nagoya miss out on a chance to temporarily go top of the table, while Gamba Osaka also failed to make up ground on leaders Kashima Antlers after a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Oita Trinita.

Nagoya sits one point behind Kashima, which faces Urawa in Sunday's match of the day, while Gamba is two points adrift.

Shuichi Terada had a header deflected onto the crossbar after nine minutes but Magnum broke Todoroki hearts with a well-taken finish to open the scoring.

Keiji Tamada flicked on a deep pass from Akira Takeuchi and Magnum gave Eiji Kawashima no chance with a rasping drive.

Kawasaki was let off the hook when towering Norwegian striker Frode Johnsen hit the post with a low drive on 28 minutes, but Vitor Junior also smacked the woodwork before lashing home the equalizer after Seigo Narazaki could only parry North Korean international Chong Tese's shot.

At the foot of the table, Seiichiro Maki atoned for a penalty miss to give bottom club JEF United Chiba a priceless 1-0 away win at Vissel Kobe, while former Japan striker Atsushi Yanagisawa grabbed his sixth goal of the campaign in Kyoto Sanga's 2-2 draw at Kashiwa Reysol.

Elsewhere, struggling Yokohama F. Marinos drew 1-1 away to FC Tokyo while Jubilo Iwata against Tokyo Verdy also finished 1-1.

In Sunday's other games, Omiya Ardija hosts Shimizu S-Pulse and Albirex Niigata meets Consadole Sapporo.

Robinson on move

BLACKBURN , England (AP) England goalkeeper Paul Robinson joined Blackburn Rovers from Tottenham on Friday night in a five-year deal worth £3.5 million ($7 million).

The 28-year-old Robinson is Paul Ince's first acquisition since taking charge at Ewood Park last month.

It paves the way for American goalkeeper Brad Friedel to leave Rovers for Aston Villa after he was given permission Friday to begin transfer negotiations.

That deal was dependent on Ince signing a replacement.

Robinson was the first-choice England goalkeeper before a string of high-profile blunders, and at Spurs he struggled to get playing time after Juande Ramos took charge.

His future at the club dimmed even further when Ramos last month acquired Brazil goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven.
