Marques headed Nagoya in front after nine minutes before Jubilo, missing star striker Rodrigo Gral and a number of first-team regulars on national team duty, leveled through Sho Naruoka midway through the first half.

But two goals in the space of six minutes from last season's J. League top scorer Ueslei put Nagoya in control and Yusuke Nakatani and substitute Tetsuya Okayama both netted to kill off Iwata, which grabbed a late consolation from the penalty spot through Toshihiro Hattori.

The result kept Nagoya at the top of Group B with maximum points from two games, four clear of Albirex Niigata, which drew 4-4 at home to Gamba Osaka. Jubilo is bottom with one point.

Elsewhere, Urawa Reds' hopes of defending their Nabisco title were dealt another blow after a 2-0 reverse away to Shimizu S-Pulse in Group C.

Kota Sugiyama and Yoshikiyo Kuboyama both found the target early in the second half to condemn Urawa to a second straight defeat. JEF United Ichihara tops the group on six points after a 4-1 away win to Oita Trinita.

In another high scoring match Tokyo Verdy thrashed 10-man Cerezo Osaka 4-1 to stay top of Group A on goal difference ahead of Yokohama F. Marinos, who came from a goal down to see off Sanfrecce Hiroshima 2-1.

Vissel Kobe leads Group D after a 1-1 draw at Kashiwa Reysol, while FC Tokyo won 2-1 at Kashima Antlers for a share of second place.

The group stage features 16 first-division teams playing home and away matches in four groups with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals. The third round of matches will be played on May 29.
