Cafu to join Marinos

Brazil right-back Cafu of AS Roma has agreed to join the Yokohama F. Marinos after the current European season, the J. League Division One club announced Thursday.

Yokohama will get the services of Cafu, veteran of three World Cups, from July 1 on a six-month contract. The J. League first stage will begin March 21 but will have a break between May 25 and July 4 due to national team activities.

Cafu, formerly of Sao Paulo FC, Real Zaragoza and Palmeiras, has played for Brazil in 115 games and served as captain in this past World Cup, helping the South American powerhouse win the tournament for a record fifth time.

Yokohama, which finished second in the overall standings last season, is aiming to win the league championship in the coming season under the guidance of Japan's 1998 World Cup and former Consadole Sapporo manager Takeshi Okada.

In other related news, Italian club Reggina completed the transfer of the Yokohama F. Marinos' former midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura on a permanent deal.
