AP

HIROSHIMA — Maya Hayes scored a hat trick to lead the United States over Ghana 4-0 Monday in the Americans' opener at the Women's Under-20 World Cup.

Kinda Addai's own goal in the 20th minute put the U.S. ahead. Hayes doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, heading in a cross from Kealia Ohai, and made it 3-0 in the 74th with a right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area. She completed her hat trick two minutes into injury time.

Germany beat China in the other Group D game on goals by Lena Lotzen, Anja Hegenauer and Luisa Wensing and an own goal from Lin Yuping. The U.S. plays China on Thursday and finishes the first round against Germany next Monday.
