Struggling Wolves fire McCarthy

AP

Wolverhampton, England — Wolverhampton Wanderers have fired manager Mick McCarthy with the club struggling to stay in the Premier League.

McCarthy's last match in charge was Sunday's 5-1 home loss to local rival West Bromwich Albion, a result that plunged the team into the relegation zone.

In a statement released on Monday, Wolves said "the board took the decision to terminate Mick's contract after a run of form which has seen Wolves pick up only 14 points from the last 22 league games."

McCarthy joined Wolves when the team was in the second-tier League Championship and led it to promotion in 2009.

Terry Connor, Wolves assistant manager, will take charge of the first team while the club searches for McCarthy's replacement.
