Bruce to manage Sunderland

SUNDERLAND, England (AP) Sunderland appointed Steve Bruce as manager on Wednesday after reaching an agreement to hire him from Premier League rival Wigan.

The former Manchester United defender has signed a three-year contract to succeed Ricky Sbragia, who quit last month.

The clubs agreed this week on a compensation package to release Bruce from his contract, likely to be close to the £3 million ($4.89 million) Wigan paid Birmingham under similar circumstances 19 months ago.
