Sunscreen with added benefits being used year-round

Sunscreen products designed to give additional benefits such as skin care and whitening are selling well as the adverse impact of ultraviolet rays on skin prompts people to use the products all year round.

"A growing number of people are not limiting their use of sunscreen to the summertime," said an official at Haba Laboratories Inc.

Noevir Co., a unit of Noevir Holdings Co., has released a product containing a whitening ingredient to prevent the formation of melanin, which causes blemishes and freckles.

Since May, Dr.Ci:Labo Co. has been selling a skin cream product developed to work in six ways, including sunscreen, makeup base and foundation.

Meanwhile, other products are being heavily marketed. Haba has developed a powdered sunscreen that is easy to carry around, while both Kanebo Cosmetics Inc., which is a unit of Kao Corp., and Kose Corp. have made products that can be washed off easily with facial wash.

According to a survey by Lion Corp., 53 percent of people say they take measures against ultraviolet rays throughout the year.

The new products are seen attracting people who in the past have been reluctant to use sunscreen daily because of its image as sticky and as having the potential to damage skin.

"As well as the improved texture, the additional product features are expected to expand the size of sunscreen markets further," said an official of Noevir.
