Hiromiki Maruyama, who runs a secondhand store in Hioki, Kagoshima Prefecture, made the winning bid for the car, produced in 1957 and used until 2009 in Kumamoto and other parts of Kyushu.

"I want to show this to kids so they can understand the importance of recycling," said the 70-year-old Maruyama.

"The car was aging, and it was difficult even to secure repair parts. We had thought we could do nothing but scrap it," said Kenichi Imoto, a traffic bureau official with the municipal government.

The rolling stock was sold on the Yahoo Auction website.

"We are happy because the car has been taken over by an enthusiast who loves (trains)," Imoto said.
