Yasuhiko cites 'Gundam' manga adaptation's focus on 'human drama'

The manga series "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin," an adaptation of TV's "Mobile Suit Gundam," focused on the human drama in the lives of its main characters, the creator said as he concluded a 10-year run on the comic book.

"The depiction of human drama turned out to be very realistic, which I did by breaking the old patterns," Yoshikazu Yasuhiko said of the megahit manga series, of which more than 10 million copies have been printed.

One of the distinctive features of the series is the addition of story lines involving events preceding director Yoshiyuki Tomino's original animation, which Yasuhiko praised as "miraculously good."

He said he re-created Tomino's work by "adding angles" rather than altering or disrupting the original story.

"I felt like I finally understand who Char really is," Yasuhiko said.
