"Cosplayers," who often go to great lengths to match their costumes, makeup and hairstyles to those of their favorite "anime," manga and video game characters, can bring wigs to the salon fuwat, where a hairstylist and an assistant stylist create the desired look.

"What's important is that we try to grasp the different images people have of the same characters," said Umeko, an assistant stylist.

The customers leave their wigs with the stylists for about a week. A final fitting is conducted when they return to pick them up. The service is by reservation only.

"We are trying to create a 2.5-dimensional world between the two-dimensional, virtual world and the 3-dimensional real world," said Aki, a stylist at the salon.
