Learn to cook tofu dishes at Suita's YMCA

YWCA Senri Center's Bridges Program is seeking participants for an English-language tofu cooking class from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 27 in the city of Suita, Osaka Prefecture.

In the class, participants will make tofu burgers, "horenso no siraae" (spinach and tofu salad), "sumashijiru" (soup with tofu), tofu cheesecake and jelly. Participants are urged to bring an apron, a head scarf and a cleaning cloth.

Participation is ¥1,500. Advance reservations are required by June 20 via e-mail. The venue is YWCA Senri Center, which is about a 10-minute walk from Kita Senri Station on the Hankyu Senri Line.

Grand Antique Fair to take place in Kyoto

The 47th Grand Antique Fair in Kyoto will take place in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, from June 18 to 20.

There will be around 350 antique shops, displaying items such as folding screens, hanging scrolls, tea ceremony utensils, Japanese furniture, ukiyo-e wood block prints, ceramic wares and antique kimono.

Admission is free. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the venue is Kyoto Sogo Mihonichi Kaikan, also known as Pulse Plaza Kyoto. There will be a free shuttle bus service available from Takeda Station on the Karasuma subway or Kintetsu Kyoto lines. Takeda Station is about a seven-minute ride from JR Kyoto Station.

Lecture in Osaka on Japan's biotech industry

The Kansai Canada Business Association is holding an English-language lecture on the biotech industry from 7 p.m. on June 18 in Kita Ward, Osaka.

Gregory Rall, the international collaboration coordinator at the Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation in Kobe will give a talk about the current state of the Japanese biotech and pharmaceutical industries, their global business activities, the Kansai region's current innovations and opportunities, and an overview of opportunities abroad including Canada.

There will be a networking session from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Participation is ¥2,500 for association members and ¥3,000 for nonmembers. The venue is Ramada Osaka Hotel. For an access map, go to www.ramada-osaka.com (in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean).

Seminar on Asian culture held in Kobe Kobe Asian Plaza is hosting a seminar on Asian culture from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 10 in Nagata Ward, Kobe.

Dinesh Neupane, a Nepalese student from the doctoral program of Kobe University, will talk about colorful Hindu festivals in Nepal. The seminar will be held in Japanese.

Participation is ¥840, which must be paid by mail by July 8. Those who wish to participate must call the organizer in advance for details and availability.

The venue is on the fourth floor of Shoes Plaza, which is about a three-minute walk north of Shin Nagata Station on the JR Kobe Line.
