Competitors sought for Kobe speech contest

The Kobe Cross Cultural Center is seeking competitors for the 30th annual speech contest in English and Japanese, which will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 22 at the Kobe Club in Chuo Ward, Kobe.

This year's theme is: "To Break Through the Global Crisis in the 21st Century — What kind of Leadership is Needed?"

For the Nov. 22 finalist presentations, Vikas Swarup, consul general of India to Osaka and Kobe, is scheduled to be present. He is the original writer of the Academy Award-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire."

Applicants can be of any nationality but must be over 16 years old. They will be expected to discuss the topic in both English and Japanese. Speeches can last up to five minutes in each language.

About 10 finalists will be selected among all applicants to give oral presentations on Nov. 22. The first-prize winner will receive a trophy from the mayor of Kobe, a round-trip ticket to Cairns and a single-lens reflex digital camera.

'Garage Sale' to be held at Expo Park in Suita

Expo Park in Suita, Osaka, will open a "Garage Sale" flea market from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 23.

The market is being held in the Omatsuri Hiroba (Festival Space) in the park's Shizen Bunka-en (Natural and Cultural Gardens), which is near Banpaku Kinen Koen Station on the Osaka Monorail Line.

Admission to the Shizen Bunka-en is ¥250. Another ¥350 is required to enter the area where the market will be held. The event will be canceled in case of rain.

Kobe hosts wildlife photography exhibition

Hyogo International Association is holding a photography exhibition of wildlife in Chuo Ward, Kobe, till Sept. 7.

The exhibition presents photographs of such animals as tigers, elephants, and polar bears, as well as panels explaining the situations surrounding them.

The venue is the gallery space of Hyogo International Plaza, which is on the second floor of the International Health Development Center Building. Go to www.hyogo-ip.or.jp/ for an access map.

Admission is free. The venue is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (till 5 p.m. on Saturday). The venue is closed on Sunday and holidays.
