Expert to give seminar on English education
The English Language Instruction Network Center of Kansai University is hosting a seminar on applied linguistics from 6 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. Oct. 15 in Suita, Osaka Prefecture.
Merrill Swain, a professor emeritus of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, will give a talk titled "Talking it Through: 'Languaging' as a Source of Second Language Learning" in English.
English teachers, graduate and undergraduate students, and others interested in English-language education are invited. Admission is free. Those wishing to attend the seminar should apply through the organizer's Web site at e-linc.gp.kansai-u.ac.jp/ Eighty people will be accepted.

In-depth seminar on patent translations
The Japan Association of Translators (JAT) will hold a patent translation seminar and discussion 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in Osaka.
This meeting will be intended for current working patent translators with specific patent translation-related questions, particularly the kind of questions that can be hard to answer and may have more than one answer. The emphasis will be on translation designed to produce English documents for use outside Japan.
Participation is free for JAT members, ¥500 for JTF (Japan Translation Federation) members and ¥1,000 for nonmembers. There will be a social gathering following the seminar for those interested. An advance application is required via e-mail to Catherine Nakamichi at email@example.com. Registration must be made by Oct. 6.

The venue is Room 7 on the 26th floor of Hankyu Grand Building, which is about a 15-minute walk from JR Osaka Station or Hankyu and Hanshin Umeda stations.

Big spring/summer fashion show in Osaka
Osaka Import Collection 2009 Spring/Summer will be staged at the Ritz-Carlton Osaka, in Kita Ward, Osaka, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 31.
The large-scale fashion show, aimed at the 20s to 30s age group, offers a rare opportunity in Osaka to see the up-and-coming fashion trends, featuring overseas brands such as Italy's frankie morello, 55DSL, and Laltramoda. Well-known Japanese models Anne and Yu Yamada are scheduled to make appearances. A party will be held following the show from around 10 p.m.
Tickets are available in advance for ¥5,000 for the fashion show and ¥4,000 for the party. At the door, entrance is ¥6,000 for the show and ¥5,000 for the party. Advance tickets can be purchased at ticket agencies Pia, E+, and CN Playguide and the Lawson convenience store chain.
