Four Stories preparing Osaka reading session

Four Stories, a literary salon with branches in Boston, Tokyo and Osaka, will hold a reading session from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday in Kita Ward, Osaka.

Four writers will read their original stories aloud to an audience. Dutch-born author Hans Brinckmann, translator and author Deborah Iwabuchi, Nanzan University instructor Sarah Mulvey, and Canadian writer Oweb Schaefer of Tokyo will join Sunday's session to read their stories in English.

No admission fee or application is required. The venue is Portugalia, a Portuguese restaurant just north of the U.S. Consulate in Osaka. Check www.portugalia.jp/access.html for an access map.

Translation group plans to host patent lecture

The Kansai Chapter of the Japan Association of Translators is hosting a lecture on patent translation from 1:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on July 5 in Kita Ward, Osaka.

Software expert Chris Pearce and a veteran translator Kiyoshi Fujimura will give a lecture titled "Software Localization and Patent Translation for Beginners."

Admission is ¥1,000 for nonmembers and free for JAT members. The venue is Hankyu Grand Building Room 7, which is near the Umeda stations on the Midosuji subway or Hankyu lines.

Film group to screen Tibet documentaries

Cinema Nipponia, a group of film reviewers, will hold a special screening of documentary films on Tibet in English or with English subtitles from July 19 to 25 at Cine Nouveau X, a movie theater in Nishi Ward, Osaka.

"Tibet Tibet" (2005) directed by Kim Young Sung, will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles, and "Escape over the Himalayas" (2000) by director Maria Blumencron will be shown in English. These two films will be screened once a day from July 19 to 25. "Tibetan Refugees: A Struggle Beyond Generations" (2000) directed by Tanaka Kunihiko, will also be shown in English on July 20, 22 and 25.

Tickets can be purchased at ticket agency Pia for ¥1,000 in advance and ¥1,200 at the door.

The venue is a three-minute walk from Kujo Station on the Chuo subway line.
