NTT DoCoMo eyes ¥1 trillion sales from smartphone-related business

Jiji

NTT DoCoMo Inc. has set a sales target of ¥1 trillion in fiscal 2015 from new smartphone-related business, according to the carrier's new president.

At his first news conference since assuming his post Tuesday, Kaoru Kato said the firm expects to develop new businesses to boost sales 2.5-fold from around ¥400 billion at present.

He said Japan's leading mobile phone carrier believes it won't be able to depend on revenue from mobile communications fees alone for future growth.

"NTT DoCoMo intends to capitalize on its world-leading capability of developing technologies," Kato said Wednesday, noting cloud-based services in particular will be targeted.

The company, which has already started cloud-based voice recognition and email translation services, plans to expand such services to sectors including health care, ecology, food, finance and online shopping, mainly for smartphone users.

Kato also indicated he aims to be active in seeking tieups with other firms, saying, "For greater speed, the company will develop content with outside help."

As strengthening businesses is a key target of DoCoMo's medium-term business plan, he said the company will speed up efforts to explore demand for various information services utilizing its telecommunications networks.
