Mazda takes 20,000 CX-5 orders

Jiji

Mazda Motor Corp. said Monday that it has received nearly 20,000 orders in Japan for its new CX-5 sport utility vehicle in some three months since its debut on Feb. 16.

The number of CX-5 orders reached 19,600 as of last May 22, about six times the targeted sales figure for three months, the Hiroshima Prefecture-based automaker said.

The CX-5 is equipped either with a gasoline or "clean diesel" engine, and some 80 percent of the orders were placed for the next-generation diesel model thanks to a technology that substantially reduces emissions of toxic air pollutants, Mazda said. Mazda aims to sell 160,000 units of the CX-5 in the global market a year.
