Soup made in a teapot makes for autumn treat

The Park Hotel Tokyo is celebrating its seventh anniversary in September and has prepared special kaiseki lunches and dinners at its Japanese restaurant Hanasansho.

The courses feature Japan's popular autumn dish dobin mushi, a soup of matsutake mushrooms steamed in a teapot, among other carefully prepared seasonal dishes. A cup of sake that matches the dishes will accompany the meal.

The plan is available through Sept. 30 for lunch (11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and dinner (5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.). The lunch course is ¥6,300 and the dinner course is ¥10,500, including tax but excluding a service charge.

No need to fly to the moon this fall

Contemplating the auspicious full moon of mid-autumn is the Chinese tradition that in Japan became known as tsukimi, which literally means moon-viewing. It is also believed that the moon looks its most beautiful on that day.

To celebrate autumn, Hilton Tokyo's Chinese restaurant Dynasty has prepared a special course menu through Sept. 28, which covers the Sept. 22 full moon.

Dynasty's chef has created each course to represent an image of the moon. Mooncakes, an essential item for the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, will be served for dessert. The eight-course meal is available for lunch (11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and dinner (5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.; from 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays) at ¥14,500, including tax and service charge.

Singaporean buffet hits Osaka

Swissotel Nankai Osaka will hold a Singaporean food fair from Sept. 4 to 12. Authentic Singaporean cuisine will be created by guest chefs from its sister hotel in Singapore.

Dishes, including staples such as laksa (spicy noodle soup) and Hainanese chicken rice, will be served at the lunch and dinner buffets at Cafe Swiss. In addition, the Raffles Singapore Sling cocktail, created at the Raffles Hotel in 1915, will be available at the restaurant during the fair.

The lunch buffet (11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) costs ¥3,234 on weekdays and ¥3,465 on weekends and the dinner buffet (5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.) is ¥3,696 and ¥4,158 respectively. The buffet is ¥1,963 per child. The prices include coffee or tea and tax and service charges.

On the final day of the fair, a cooking class will be held in conjunction with the lunch buffet. The class starts at 12 p.m. at restaurant Shun followed by the lunch buffet at Cafe Swiss for a total of ¥4,400 per person. Reservations are required.

Osaka hotels' Chinese food fair

Four Osaka hotels will reprise their Chinese culinary fair from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 after the spectacular success of the first event earlier this year.

The Hotel Granvia Osaka (Beijing cuisine), the Hotel Hankyu International (Shanghai cuisine), the Sheraton Miyako Hotel Osaka (Sichuan cuisine) and the Hotel Nikko Osaka (Cantonese cuisine) will be competing over which hotel prepares the finest Chinese meals.

The lunch and dinner courses are the same price for every hotel, with lunches running at ¥2,800 and dinners ¥10,000. Though each hotel offers different meals, the meals are in line with the concept of promoting health and beauty.

There will also be a stamp rally where repeat customers will be able to enjoy special prizes based upon the number of times they attend the fair, including the chance to be among 12 lucky participants to win the first prize of dinner for two at one of the hotels.
