White truffles at the Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo will host a "Great Chefs of the World" dinner fair from Nov. 13 to 20 at the Forty Five French restaurant, featuring that rarest of delicacies, white truffles.

One of the hotel's series of fairs, Great Chefs of the World showcases the culinary skills of chefs from the Ritz-Carltons located across 24 countries.

This time, Arnaud Berthelier (right) has been invited from The Ritz-Carlton Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia, to prepare a French course menu that highlights prized truffles from Alba in the Langhe region of northern Italy.

On Nov. 13, Terry Peabody, owner of New Zealand's popular Craggy Range Winery, will be on hand to offer some of his wines, which will be uncorked in Japan for the first time. The dinner course costs ¥18,000 person for two appetizers, two main dishes and a dessert (it includes the Craggy Range wine on the first day). A second dinner course is priced at ¥25,000 and includes three appetizers, two mains and a dessert.

Park Hotel Beaujolais countdown

The Park Hotel Tokyo will hold a countdown party to celebrate the Nov.-20 release of this year's Beaujolais Nouveau at The Lounge on the 25th floor of Shiodome Media Tower.

As the clock strikes midnight, casks and bottles will be opened to serve guests unlimited quantities of the new Beaujolais. A tasting set of several kinds of Beaujolais and snacks are also available for an additional charge, and there will be a prize draw.

In support of the Pink Ribbon Campaign, part of the admissions will be donated to Breast Cancer Network Japan.

The party starts at 11:50 p.m. (reception from 11:30 p.m.) on Nov. 19 and finishes at 1 a.m. on Nov. 20. Admission is ¥3,000.

Sizzling menus at the Side Door

With its sophisticated setting and succulent steaks, Side Door, near Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, has become a favorite of Western expats.

In addition to the comfortable, low-key dining space, a seven-meter-high curtain of water serves as a backdrop to the bar in the restaurant, and there is a lounge where you can sink into a sofa after dinner.

The menu features French-cooking-inspired charcoal-grilled dishes. Carefully selected ingredients, including aged beef, fresh fish and organic vegetables direct from the farm, are cooked over special bincho charcoal, a traditional Japanese coal favored for grilling, and crafted into French-style dishes.

The Side Door prides itself on its sirloin steak (¥3,150 for 100 grams). The restaurant selects the lean beef preferred by Westerners over marbled Japanese beef, aging it for about two weeks to tenderize it. Salt is the best seasoning, but you can choose from four sauces — BBQ, horseradish, ponzu (citrus-based soy sauce) and radish, and red wine.

The extensive wine list features more then 100 wines, from California, France, Italy and other parts of the world.

Dinner courses are priced at ¥4,800, ¥7,300 and ¥12,000, and a la carte selections start at ¥780.
