The Nagashima Museum in Kagoshima is wishing Barbie a belated birthday. A special exhibition displaying more than 300 versions of the famous blond-haired doll along with her boyfriend, Ken, and other characters from the brand wraps up this weekend. The doll celebrated 50 years on toy shelves in 2009. She first appeared across the United States in 1959. Barbie was created by Ruth Handler and produced by her husband's toy company, Mattel. The doll rocketed to popularity as an icon of American pop culture and has become a global phenomenon since. The Barbie Exhibition takes place at Nagashima Museum in Kagoshima until Jan. 15 ( 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.). Admission is ¥900 (¥600 for junior high school students, ¥300 for elementary school students.
