TOKYO

Noh theaters to present English performance

Staff writer

'Pagoda," a unique English-language noh play that premiered to packed houses in Europe in 2009 is touring Tokyo and Kyoto on June 28 and 30, respectively.

Produced jointly by international noh company Theatre Nohgaku and the 400-year-old Oshima Noh Theatre from Japan, the play was written by Jannette Cheong. It's based on the story of Cheong's grandmother who sent her young son away to avoid a famine in China in the 1920s.

"Pagoda" takes place at Tokyo's National Noh Theatre and Kyoto's Kongo Noh Theatre. Tickets cost ¥5,000 in advance (¥5,500 at the door). www.noh-oshima.com/noh/pagoda/2011pagoda-e.html.
