Osaka to celebrate tower
By TOMOKO OTAKE
Artists from across the Kansai area are holding a series of art workshops and performances to boost the profile of Tsutenkaku, a longtime landmark in Osaka, from Feb. 5 through Feb. 13.
The 103-meter-tall observation tower, as well as the Shinsekai district in southern Osaka where the tower is, will turn into venues for various family- friendly events. Among them is hikari asobi naito (playing with lights night) on Feb. 10, in which participants can play with lights and their own shadows reflected on the outer walls of the area's buildings.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to take photos with a collection of mannequins set up in the neighborhood, or play with a special-effects mirror placed on the third floor of Tsutenkaku that skews and distorts images. Crafts, photography and illustrations, as well as regional foodstuffs, will also be on sale during the event period.
"Tsumutenkaku" takes place in Naniwa Ward, Osaka, from Feb. 5-13. For more information, call (06) 4963-2650 or visit www.tsumutenkaku.com.
