Mejiro gets a Baroque makeover

Forget its curious title and head to Tokyo's Mejiro district to catch a host of concerts featuring Baroque music running through June 24. The Mejiro Ba-Rock Music Festival 2007 is expected to attract around 10,000 people to its 12 concert venues dotted among this largely residential area.

Among the programs are performances of Italian madrigals, violin concertos from the 17th and 18th century, religious music from Spain and Latin America and religious works composed by Bach and Monteverdi.

Highlights include Enrico Gatti & Ricreation d'Arcadia, who will perform at Toppan Hall on June 9 (1:30 p.m.; 5,000 yen). The Italian violinist will play a Baldassare Galuppi concerto for four parts as well as works by Vivaldi and Giuseppe Tartini. Uruguayan Rafael Bonavita, recognized internationally for his 17th-century Baroque lute playing, will play Gallery Jun on June 10 (11 a.m.; 3,000 yen).
