'Vagina Monologues' comeback
"The Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler, still running to packed houses in the West End and the winner of the 2002 Best Entertainment prize at the Olivier Awards, is now set to return to Tokyo.
This time, there will be two versions -- one in Japanese and the other in English with the three women characters played by Mizuka, Chizuru Onoyama and Tsuzumi Yamamoto, and the other in English with Lynn Sherman, Jenny Jamora and Monique Wilson.
Monique Wilson, the founder and artistic director of one of the Philippines' leading theatre groups, New Voice Company, is directing both versions.
In what is a straight speech drama about women's sexuality, sexual abuse and the widespread misunderstanding of the nature of women, the play consists of women introducing episodes from real life experiences, sometimes with wit, sometimes with bawdy fervor, sometimes with anguish -- but always with credibility, since all the episodes are based on interviews playwright Ensler conducted with more than 200 women around the world.
"The Vagina Monologues" runs from May 27 to 31, seven stages in English and from June 1 to 4, five stages in Japanese at Theater V Akasaka, a five-minute walk from Akasaka Station on the Chiyoda subway line.
