Satsuma-ware produced by the potters of the renowned Shim Soo Kwan (Chin Jukan family) in Kagoshima Prefecture over 15 generations is on display at Kyoto Dento Kogeikan (Gallery of Kyoto Traditional Arts & Crafts) through May 8.
The first head of the Shim family was among some 80 Korean potters who Yoshihiro Shimazu, the head of the Shimazu feudal clan, brought to Satsuma (present Kagoshima Prefecture) in 1597.
"Chin Ju Kan-ke Rekidai-ten (Successive Generations of the Shim Soo Kwan Family)" is open 10 a.m-6 p.m. at Kyoto Dento Kogeikan (tel. 075-229-1010. A one-minute walk from the subway Karasuma Oike Station toward Kyoto Station, on the right.)
