Buyo dancers tour Europe

A company of dancers representing various schools of nihon buyo (traditional Japanese dance) will start touring Britain and France on March 11. The performances will be led by Senzo Nishikawa, designated as a living national treasure. Fourteen nagauta (kabuki music) musicians will accompany them.

The performances will be held at the Peacock Theatre, London, March 11-12, the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, March 14 and Le Palais des Congres de Paris, March 17-18.

Six male dancers will perform "Senkei" in plain kimono. Nishikawa's daughter Yuko will perform "Shiokumi" and his son Minosuke "Tomoyakko," both in full costume.

Nishikawa and nine other dancers will perform "Kumagai Rensho -- Samurai Naozane" in plain kimono.

The performances are part of the 2005 EU-Japan Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
