Back-to-back Bach concerts

The Baroque orchestra Ubiquitous Bach and the Heinrich Schutz-Chor, Tokyo, will hold a J.S. Bach church cantata series on five consecutive Saturdays, starting Jan. 29.

The concerts will be held from 6 p.m. at the Hongo Church of Nihon Kirisuto Kyodan (the United Church of Christ of Japan) in Tokyo's Suginami Ward. Admission is free.

The program and schedule are:

* Jan. 29. Bach, Motet No. 3, "Jesu meine Freunde." Church cantata No. 81, "Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen?"

* Feb. 5. Schutz, "Es ging ein Samann aus zu saen seinen Samen." Bach, Church cantata No. 18, "Gleich wie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fallt."

* Feb. 12. Bach, Church cantata No. 127, "Herr Jesu Christ, warh'r Mensch und Gott."

* Feb. 19. Mauersberger, from "Lukaspassion" (acappella).

* Feb. 26. Demantius, "Weissagung des Leidens und Sterbens Jesu Christi." (Isaiah 53). Bach, Church cantata No. 54, "Widerstehe doch der Sunde." Rachmaninoff, from "Vs'enoshshnoe bd'enie (All-Night Vigil)" (the last by Chor Alliluiia).

To get to Hongo Church (4-24-5 Kamiogi, Suginamki-ku. Tel. [03] 3399-2730), from JR Nishi Ogikubo Station walk toward the bank on the corner, turn left (a right angle to the train tracks), cross the Zenpuku-ji river and turn right at an intersection where there is a tobacco shop on the left corner.
