Musical pioneer remembered

An event will be held on Dec. 5 to remember Robbie Basho (1940-1986), a pioneer of contemporary acoustic guitar and the so-called New Age movement.

Daniel R. Robinson, Jr., adopted the name Robbie Basho after discovering haiku poet Matsuo Basho.

Participants in the event will listen to the U.S. musician's CD "Bashovia" at the Tokyo Folklore Center and then visit the Basho Museum, where there will be a talk about Robbie Basho, whose music weaves European, Hindu, Chinese, Japanese, Persian and American Indian influences.

The event will start at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5. Admission is 1,500 yen. Interested persons must call (03) 3631-8273 (Japanese), fax (03) 3631-8268 (Japanese/ English) or e-mail r0001772@nifty.com (English) for reservations. Tokyo Folklore Center is at 1-5-15 Chitose, Sumida-ku.
