A three-play autumn series at The Loft theater within the New National Theatre opens with "Tai nai (The Womb)," in which we first meet a young hood and his mistress on the run after he stole money from his gang boss.
They take shelter from driving rain one night in a small underground shelter, where they meet a haggard soldier, recently back from the war. But then the heavy metal door of their hideout jams and, incarcerated together, the three begin sharing their life stories. Slowly but surely, relations between them change and they each begin losing their senses.
Next up in the series, cloned babies are the topic of "Hito no Kakera (Piece of a Human)," which is followed by "Futari no Onna Heishi no Monogatari (A Story About Two Women Soldiers)" in what promises to be a tasty bill of autumn fare.
"Tainai" runs through Oct. 17; "Hito no Kakera" runs from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3; "A Story About Two Women Soldiers" runs Nov. 8-21. For more details call the New National Theatre at (03) 5352-5738 or visit www.nntt.jac.go.jp
