Moriyama show christens bookstore

A solo exhibition of works by the internationally renowned photographer Daido Moriyama is being held to mark the opening of Maruzen Co.'s new main bookstore in Tokyo's Marunouchi business district.

A collection of 30 large black-and-white photos laid out by Moriyama himself are on display in a gallery on the top floor of the new four-story bookstore, which is housed in the Marunouchi Oazo Building, across from the Marunouchi North Exit of Tokyo Station.

Moriyama made a name for himself as a trailblazer in his field from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and is still producing energetic photographs today. In October 2003, he held a successful solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier Pour L'art Contemporain in Paris.

The exhibition at Maruzen, which is free, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (5 p.m. on the last day) through Sept. 23.

The bookstore has 1.5 million books, including an inventory of 200,000 foreign books -- the largest in Japan.

Maruzen's former main bookstore, located in Nihonbashi, will close on Oct. 16 and reopen in 2007.
