Lindberg to feature in music festival

Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg will be featured in the "Composium 2004" music festival opening at Tokyo Opera City next week.

Born in 1958 in Helsinki, Lindberg is known for his modernist works, which, since the 1980s, have been characterized by vitality and an emphasis on all the important elements of music -- harmony, rhythm, counterpoint and melody.

The schedule is as follows:

* May 27, 7 p.m. Duo Recital by Anssi Karttunen (cello) and Lindberg (piano) in the Recital Hall. Six pieces by Lindberg, composed from 1984 to 2002. (3,000 yen)

* May 28, 7 p.m. "Cello Concerto," "Clarinet Concerto" and "Concerto for Orchestra" by Lindberg in the Concert Hall, accompanied by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, with Karttunen on cello and Kari Kriikku on clarinet. (3 yen,000/1,000 yen)

* May 30, 5 p.m. The five final compositions selected for the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2004 will be played in the Concert Hall by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, with Lindberg serving as the sole judge. (1,000 yen)
