Show wraps up dancers' workshop

Twenty dancers aged between 12 and 41 will display the results of six weeks of study and hard work during two nights of performances at Ukyo Fureiai Bunka Kaikan in Kyoto.

The performances of "Dependency and Ecstasy" are the culmination of a six-week workshop given by German dancer Heide Tegeder. Tegeder was one of the founding members of Tanzforum Koln and a former chief dancer with Tanztheater Wuppertal, led by Pina Bausch.

Tegeder's workshop, involving 18 women and two men, started Feb. 16 at Kyoto Art Center, aiming to liberate the dancers from set patterns and to encourage them to look at their inner selves and "open" their bodies and hearts to the joy of dancing. Her first workshop in Kyoto was held in 1993 to help introduce Koeln (Cologne) to the public.

Advance tickets are 3,000 yen. Call Kyoto Doitsu Bunka Center (Kyoto Goethe-Institut) at (075) 761-2188 or Kyoto Dance Academy at (075) 211-7140. Same-day tickets are 3,500 yen.

"Dependency and Ecstasy": 7 p.m. on March 27; 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 28, Ukyo Fureiai Bunka Kaikan, a five-minute walk from JR Hanazono Station.
