Tokyo Tower to glow like a candle

Tokyo Tower will start appearing as a huge Christmas candle Dec. 23-25, looming above the metropolis in a rare display of different colors several times each evening.

Using a special pattern of illumination, the 333-meter-high tower will go dark from the lower observation deck (150 me- ters) and below. But the portion from the lower deck to the upper one (at 250 meters) will look like a candle, with its top-most part -- the upper deck to the antenna (333 meters) -- serving as the flame.

Once the special illumination scheme is in place, the usually orange structure will appear as an immense ornament floating in mid-air, using a different color each time.

The candle will light up five times a day on Dec. 23 and 25 (5:30 p.m.-10 p.m.), and six times on Dec. 24 (5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.). But the show will last for only 30 minutes, and be extinguished at midnight.

On Dec. 22, the tower will take on a green cast from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., forgoing its usual orange facade to support Eco Plan, a tree-planting project for kindergartners sponsored by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
